This Forum is dedicated to exploring the relationship between the act of writing and the lived experience of migration, forced or voluntary displacement, and exile in Arabic literature and host cultures. For over half a century now, exilic literature by writers from the Arab world to Europe or the Americas has come to embody a vast, polyphonic and diverse genre, that has blurred, changed, and expanded the boundaries of Arabic and other literatures.

This Forum proposes a critical revisiting of these legacies and the contemporary literary production by authors from Arab countries. How do the writings of migrant and/or exiled writers from Arab countries relate to concepts of literary genres in Europe, such as exilic literature in Germany? How does the language, the poetics, the concepts, and idioms of literature change when geography becomes memory, societies are torn apart, homes abandoned or destroyed, and translation overwhelms the lived present.

The event will include conversations and panel discussions by renowned European and Arab academics and writers, as well as readings by emerging exiled Arab writers.

The event is free and open to the public. It will be held in Arabic, German and English, with simultaneous translation.

The papers contributed by the participants will be made available on AFAC and EUME websites.

The Arab Fund for Arts and Culture - AFAC was established in 2007 by cultural lobbyists as an independent initiative that funds individuals and organizations in the fields of cinema, performing arts, literature, music and visual arts while facilitating cultural exchange, research and cooperation across the Arab world and globally. Since its inception it has become internationally and regionally recognized, working with a range of reputable institutional partners, and has issued around 900 grants to date with about 150 new grants per year. AFAC is registered in Switzerland with headquarters in Beirut, Lebanon.

Europe in the Middle East—The Middle East in Europe - EUME is a research program at the Berlin-based Forum Transregionale Studien (www.forum-transregionale-studien.de). EUME seeks to rethink key concepts and premises that link and divide Europe and the Middle East. EUME builds upon the previous work of the Working Group Modernity and Islam (1996-2006), the idea of “learning communities”
and the principle of “research with, rather than research on”. It allows for the invitation of 10 to 15 post-doctoral researchers every year, the organization of annual summer academies, workshops, regular seminars. So far more than 200 scholars have been EUME fellows.

Dieses Literatursymposium widmet sich dem Verhältnis zwischen dem Akt des Schreibens und der gelebten Erfahrung von Migration, Umsiedlung, Vertreibung und Exil in der arabischen Literatur und den Gastkulturen. Seit einem halben Jahrhundert ist die Exil- bzw. Emigrationsliteratur arabischer Schriftsteller_innen in Europa und den Amerikas zu einem bedeutenden, polyphonen und vielfältigen Genre herangewachsen, das die Grenzen zwischen arabischer und anderen Literaturen erweitern, verwischt und verändert.

Dieses Literatursymposium soll Raum für eine kritische Reflexion dieses neuen Erbes und der zeitgenössischen Literaturproduktion arabischer Schriftsteller_innen bieten. Wie verhält sich das Schreiben migrantischer und/oder exilierter Schriftsteller_innen aus arabischen Ländern zu Konzepten literarischer Genres in Europa, bspw. Exilliteratur in Deutschland? Wie verändern sich Sprache, Poetik, Konzepte und Idiome der Literatur, wenn Geografie Erinnerung wird, Gesellschaften auseinandergerissen, Heimat verlassen oder zerstört wird und die Übersetzung die eigentlich gelebte Gegenwart erdrückt?

In der Veranstaltung diskutieren europäische und arabische Wissenschaftler_innen und Schriftsteller_innen. Außerdem wird es Lesungen aufstrebender arabischer Exilschriftsteller_innen geben.

Dies ist eine kostenfreie und öffentliche Veranstaltung. Sie wird auf arabisch, deutsch und englisch mit Simultanübersetzungen stattfinden.

Arab Fund for Arts and Culture - AFAC wurde 2007 von Kulturlobbyisten als eine unabhängige Initiative zur Unterstützung von Personen und Organisationen, die im Bereich Film, darstellende und bildende Kunst, Literatur und Musik tätig sind, gegründet, um kulturellen Austausch, Forschung und Kooperation in der arabischen Welt und weltweit zu ermöglichen. Seit seiner Gründung wurde der Fund international und regional bekannt, arbeitet mit einer Reihe von namhaften institutionellen Partnern zusammen und hat bis heute ca. 900 Stipendien, 150 neue Stipendien jährlich, vergeben. AFAC ist in der Schweiz registriert; die Geschäftsstelle hat ihren Sitz in Beirut, Libanon.

Europa im Nahen Osten – Der Nahe Osten in Europa (EUME) ist ein Forschungsprogramm am Forum Transregionale Studien in Berlin. Die Leitidee von EUME ist die Erforschung der politischen, sozialen, religiösen und kulturellen Verflechtungen zwischen Europa und dem Nahen Osten in Geschichte und Gegenwart. Das Programm steht in der Tradition des Arbeitskreises Moderne und Islam (1996-2006) und des Prinzips »Forschen mit statt forschen über«. Es lädt jedes Jahr 10 bis 15 Postdoktorand_innen ein, organisiert Sommerakademien, Workshops und regelmäßige Seminare. Bis heute waren über 200 Wissenschaftler_innen EUME-Fellows.
