Founded in Jerusalem in 1991, Ashtar for Theatre Productions and Training is a hub for training and production of theater in Palestine and for collaboration with international theater professionals.
It began its work by introducing the first theater training program for school and university students in the West Bank. By 1993, the program expanded to Gaza, and, in 1995, Ashtar established its headquarters in Ramallah.
Ashtar envisions a free and creative Palestinian society where theater is a vital tool for cultural and developmental advancement. It seeks to use theater as a means for social change, making it an integral part of daily life in the Palestinian community, while fostering theatrical creativity. The theater runs three main programs: drama training, theater of the oppressed, and professional theater.
