Aya, 28, leads a dull life in the southern Tunisian city of Tozeur, burdened by social and familial expectations and restrictions. Aya’s quotidian existence is disrupted by a bus accident that she miraculously survives. The accident is more than a source of misfortune, however, as Aya seizes upon it as a chance for a new start, faking her own death and leaving everything behind – her family, her past, her old wounds – to seek freedom. But she discovers that her new identity has its limits, when she becomes the primary witness in an investigation.
