Amr Gamal is a filmmaker and theater director from Aden, Yemen, who has worked to revitalize Yemen’s cultural scene. As co-founder of the Khaleej Aden Theater Troupe in 2005, Gamal contributed to reintroducing live performances to Yemen after a decade-long hiatus following the 1994 civil war. His debut film feature, 10 Days Before the Wedding (2018), was one of the first Yemeni movies in 40 years to be commercially screened in theaters, achieving unexpected box office success and spotlighting the country’s budding cinema industry.
In 2023, Amr’s second feature, The Burdened, became the first Yemeni film to be selected for the Berlinale, where it won the Amnesty Award for its poignant portrayal of social issues. Amr has also received the Golden Hugo Award at the Chicago International Film Festival.
