Two documentary films supported by AFAC will hold their world premiere at the Visions du Réel in Nyon, Switzerland this April. The two films, hailing from Tunisia and Lebanon, intertwine the personal with the political, presenting intimate intergenerational narratives with revolutions and exile in the backdrop.
Premiering in the International Medium Length & Short Film Competition is the documentary “Behind the Sun” by Tunisian filmmaker Dhia Jerbi. Fearful of passing on his stammer to his young child, Dhia, living in exile in France, sets out to understand the origins of this “disorder”. He returns to visit his relatives in Tunisia, the country he left during the Revolution. A sensitive quest about the transmission of a cultural and political heritage across generations.
From Lebanon, “We Are Inside” by Farah Kassem will premiere in the International Competition section. A deeply moving and intimate yet open portrait of Lebanon in crisis, “We Are Inside” presents Farah’s relationship with her father, while the echoes of the 2019 revolution resound as backdrop. After a fifteen-year absence, Farah returns to Lebanon to live with her aging father. There, the two try to find a common language that will allow them to have one last conversation. Ultimately, that language will turn out to be the only one he understands: poetry.
